10 Tips for Going to Events Alone

Going to events alone can be an intimidating but rewarding thing to do. We compiled this list to make it less frightening and help you feel more confident. Remember, most people attend events hoping to connect with new people, and many attend alone. You’re not the only one!

  1. Choose Events That Interest You
Pick something you’re genuinely excited about. It is easier to start conversations and engage when the activity or topic resonates with you.
  2. Plan Ahead
Check the event schedule, location, and logistics to feel more prepared and confident.
  3. Set a Goal
Decide what you want to achieve from the event: meeting new people, learning something new, being in a queer space, or just enjoying yourself.
  4. Share Your Location with Friends
For safety, let friends know you’re attending the event alone and share your location so they’re aware of your whereabouts.
  5. Arrive Early
Arriving early to an event lets you get comfortable, familiarize yourself with the space, and start conversations before things get busy.
  6. Bring a Conversation Starter
Wear something unique, like a pin, tote bag, or shirt that reflects your interests. It can serve as a great icebreaker.
  7. Engage with Event Hosts
Introduce yourself to the organizers or staff—they’re usually friendly and can connect you with others.
  8. Join Group Activities
Look for interactive parts of the event, such as workshops, games, or discussions, that naturally encourage mingling.
  9. Take Breaks When Needed
It’s okay to step away and recharge. Find a quiet spot or take a quick phone break to reset.
  10. Celebrate Your Courage
Attending an event solo can feel daunting, but it’s also empowering. Reflect on your experience and what you gained from it.

Cherry FLFM is designed by and for sapphics. I (Julia) drew upon my lived experiences and those around me to create an app with our community at heart. Cherry FLFM isn't just welcoming to sapphics—it’s built with us in mind, ensuring that every interaction reflects our values, needs, and desires. We want to create a space where the features and culture are inherently inclusive and affirming, where users can tell that the app was created for sapphics by sapphics. We know the importance of being in a space where our identities are respected, our pronouns are honoured, and our relationships are validated without question.

We prioritize safety and the user experience. Cherry FLFM uses advanced filtering to allow users to find people they are compatible with based on their priorities and preferences. Additionally, Cherry FLFM differentiates itself from other platforms with its enhanced security measures to prevent bots, catfishing, and inaccurate profile information. All users must complete two-factor verification and are encouraged to undergo photo + government-issued photo ID verification for added security.

In a world where sapphic spaces are often limited and dating apps are superficial, we wanted to create a different kind of app—one that prioritizes users and community over profit. We understand that making friends and dating can be difficult and that meaningful relationships come in various forms. We do not want users to choose between platonic and romantic connections, so instead, we hope to facilitate a safe, inclusive, and diverse space for sapphics to form meaningful relationships however that looks for you. We hope you feel a sense of community and belonging on Cherry FLFM.
